What’s Actually Working on Instagram Right Now

TUNE IN ON YOUR FAVORITE APP

I take you behind the scenes of my Instagram market research and break down what’s really working, what’s being skipped, and why human-centered content is cutting through the noise.

I share what I’m seeing across Stories, the feed, and Reels and how I’m applying these insights to my own content and my clients’ strategies without chasing trends or burning out.

In this episode, I talk about:

  • Why social media feels heavier and noisier than ever
  • What’s actually getting attention on Instagram right now
  • Why Stories feel more human than the feed
  • The content formats people are skipping (and why)
  • How being “less polished” can actually build more trust

If you’ve been feeling like social media just feels…off lately, you’re not imagining it.

I’ve seen the posts.
“I miss 2019 Instagram.”
“Social media is exhausting.”
“I’m doing everything right and still getting no engagement.”

And honestly? I feel it too.

As a marketing strategist, I spend a lot of time inside platforms not just posting, but watching. Observing patterns. Paying attention to what stops me mid-scroll and what I skip without a second thought. Recently, I decided to do a deeper dive into Instagram specifically, and what I found wasn’t surprising, but it was clarifying.

Let’s talk about what’s actually working right now, what’s being ignored, and how to simplify your content without disappearing.

Marketing Feels Heavy Right Now and There’s a Reason

Social media is louder than it’s ever been.

More ads.
More reels.
More people telling you how to grow…while growing by telling you how to grow.

It’s no wonder so many business owners feel burned out. You’re pouring time and energy into content that barely gets seen, let alone engaged with. And when that happens consistently, it starts to feel pointless.

But here’s the thing: the problem isn’t that content doesn’t work anymore. It’s that the way we’re being told to show up doesn’t match how people actually consume content today.

Why Stories Still Matter More Than We Think

If I’m being honest, I don’t spend much time watching Reels.

Most of my attention goes to Stories and there’s a reason for that.

Stories are unfiltered. They’re low-pressure. They’re where people show up as they are sometimes dressed up, sometimes not, sometimes mid-thought holding their phone like FaceTime.

That’s what makes them powerful.

While scrolling, I noticed a few clear patterns:

  • Ads are everywhere. Every few stories, another ad pops up. It’s annoying, but it’s not changing anytime soon.

  • People are choosing connections intentionally. Instead of passively scrolling, I’ve started clicking into specific people’s stories, because I want to engage with them, not ads.

  • Low-effort doesn’t mean low-impact. “Today’s agenda” posts, casual updates, and behind-the-scenes moments were some of the most viewed stories I saw.

Stories work because they don’t feel like marketing. They feel like real life and that’s exactly why they build trust.

The Power of Signature Storytelling

One thing that stood out during my research was how effective signature styles are.

Some people share their daily coffee with a business thought.
Some do walk-and-talk videos.
Some share travel shots with reflections layered on top.

These aren’t trends. They’re patterns that feel familiar and familiarity builds trust.

When your audience knows what to expect from you, consistency becomes easier. Not because you’re forcing yourself to post, but because you’ve created a rhythm that fits your life.

What’s Happening in the Instagram Feed

Now let’s talk about the feed, because wow, it’s noisy.

Reels. Reels. Ads. Carousels. Ads. More Reels.

Instagram is clearly prioritizing video, but here’s the important part: not all video performs the same.

The content that stood out wasn’t the most polished. It was:

  • Talking-head videos that felt conversational

  • Static posts with actual photos of the person

  • Carousels with large, readable text

  • Clean visuals without information overload

What got skipped?

  • Overdesigned graphics

  • Carousels packed with tiny text

  • Posts that felt like they took more effort to read than they were worth

People want to consume content easily. If they have to squint, work, or think too hard, they’re moving on.

Why Being “Human” Cuts Through the Noise

Across Stories, the feed, and Reels, one theme kept showing up:

People are responding to content that feels human.

Not trendy.
Not perfect.
Not overly produced.

Human.

That means showing your face. Sharing your thoughts. Talking to your audience like they’re real people, because they are.

This is why faceless marketing is becoming harder to sustain. In 2026 and beyond, people want to know who they’re connecting with before they buy.

And honestly? That’s a good thing.

What’s Working in Reels Right Now

Reels aren’t going anywhere, but how they work is shifting.

The Reels that stood out felt like:

  • FaceTime conversations

  • Podcast clips

  • Behind-the-scenes moments

  • Casual movement paired with strong captions

Visuals support the message, but they don’t overpower it. The hook is clear. The text is readable. The content feels intentional without feeling forced.

And yes, memes and trends still have a place if they fit your personality. Not everyone needs to do them, and that’s okay.

Your Strategy Doesn’t Need to Be Louder

After all this research, the biggest takeaway was simple:

You don’t need to post more.

You need to post in a way that aligns with how people already consume content and how you want to show up.

For me, that looks like:

  • Talking-head videos

  • Podcast clips

  • Travel and behind-the-scenes B-roll

  • FaceTime-style Stories

For my clients, it looks different. And that’s the point. I don’t build strategies around trends. I build them around people.

You Are the Strategy

The content that works right now isn’t about doing more. It’s about being recognizable, readable, and real.

Human connection is what builds trust.
Trust is what builds relationships.
And relationships are what build sustainable businesses.

This isn’t a trend, it’s a return to what marketing should have always been.

If your marketing feels heavy, that’s not a sign to quit. It’s a sign to simplify.

And it starts with you.
