Marketing can sometimes feel like a black hole. You’re posting on social, sending emails, showing up consistently… and still hearing crickets. It’s frustrating, it’s confusing, and it might even make you question if anyone’s paying attention.

If that’s you, you’re not alone. I’ve had this exact conversation with so many financial professionals—accountants, CPAs, and CFOs—who are putting in the effort and still wondering: “Is my marketing actually working?”

The truth is, effective marketing isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing more of what actually works. That’s where the TAP Method comes in: Test, Analyze, Pivot.

Why Marketing Feels Like It’s Not Working

We’ve all been there:

  • You send an email… no replies.
  • You post to LinkedIn or Instagram… no likes, no comments.
  • You question whether your audience is even out there.

It’s tempting to assume that your content isn’t good or that people just don’t care. But most of the time, it’s not about the content—it’s about how you’re using it.

Marketing isn’t magic—it’s an experiment. And like any good experiment, it needs a system.

The TAP Method: Your New Marketing Framework

This method is what I use for myself and my clients when marketing feels stuck, stale, or just plain confusing. It’s simple but powerful.

T = Test

Start by testing different strategies with intention.

Don’t just throw spaghetti at the wall—give yourself permission to try things thoughtfully.

You can test:

  • Content types (educational, behind-the-scenes, storytelling)
  • Platforms (LinkedIn, Instagram, Threads)
  • Formats (reels, carousels, single posts, email subject lines)

For example, when I looked at my Q1 analytics, Instagram was giving me nothing. But LinkedIn? DMs, engagement, and actual leads. So guess where I’m focusing this quarter? Yep—LinkedIn and Threads.

The key here is to test without overthinking. You’re not failing by trying something new—you’re learning.

A = Analyze

This is where most people get stuck. They try one thing, it doesn’t go viral, and they assume it’s a flop. But let me tell you: virality is not the goal—relevance is.

Ask yourself:

  • Who is engaging with your content—your ideal clients or just peers?
  • Which posts are getting saved, shared, or replied to?
  • What platform is actually driving traffic or leads?

One post may tank on Instagram but do great on LinkedIn. That doesn’t mean your content is bad—it might just need a different stage.

And remember, in the financial industry, engagement often looks different. You might not get a flood of comments or likes, but that doesn’t mean your audience isn’t watching or paying attention.

P = Pivot

Once you’ve tested and analyzed, it’s time to pivot.

This is the step where people usually give up too soon. They’ll say:

  • “That didn’t work, so I’m done with Instagram.”
  • “Nobody opened that email, so email marketing must be dead.”

But really, most of the time, you just need to make a few smart tweaks.

Examples of pivoting:

  • Double down on LinkedIn if that’s where leads are coming from.
  • Focus on Stories if they’re getting more views than feed posts.
  • Switch your email subject line strategy if open rates are low.

Your content doesn’t need a complete overhaul—just a shift. Sometimes, the smallest changes make the biggest difference.

Track What Matters (Not Just Vanity Metrics)

Marketing isn’t about likes—it’s about leads.

So let’s stop obsessing over metrics that don’t move the needle.

Instead, track what actually helps you grow:

  • Engagement from ideal clients
  • Website traffic from social platforms
  • Email open and click-through rates
  • Leads and inquiries from your content

I personally use a simple Google Sheet to track my KPIs monthly: email stats, post-performance, lead sources, and trends. Then each quarter, I do a deep-dive strategy week for myself and my clients.

This isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being intentional.

Key Takeaways

If you take nothing else from this, remember these:

  1. Marketing is about testing, learning, and adjusting.
  2. Use the TAP Method to simplify your strategy: Test, Analyze, Pivot.
  3. Track meaningful engagement over vanity metrics.
  4. Small, consistent tweaks > complete overhauls.

You’re not failing at marketing—you might just need a better system.
