The Messy Middle of Marketing

TUNE IN ON YOUR FAVORITE APP

Marketing is rarely clean or perfectly timed. Life happens. Businesses shift. Priorities change. And sometimes the best thing you can do is stop forcing everything to look polished and start moving with what’s real.

In this episode of Simplified Marketing, I’m talking about the messy middle of marketing and what it actually looks like when life, business, and growth don’t follow a neat timeline.

In this episode I talk about:
✨ Why January didn’t feel like a “fresh start” this year and why that’s okay
✨ What work-life integration really looks like (especially in seasons of motherhood)
✨ Why I shifted from agency life back to being a solopreneur
✨ The hardest business decision I had to make
✨ Why flow—not hustle—is guiding how I build my business and help clients market sustainably

If you’ve been feeling behind, scattered, or unsure how to market consistently while still living your life, this episode is for you.

Marketing is often sold as something neat and predictable. Create a plan. Follow the calendar. Stay consistent. Grow.

But if you’ve been in business for more than five minutes, you already know that’s not how real life works.

Life changes. Energy shifts. Priorities move. And suddenly the marketing plan that made sense three months ago feels impossible to keep up with.

That space between where you were and where you want to go is what I call the messy middle of marketing.

And most of us are living in it.

When Life and Business Don’t Sync Perfectly

I had every intention of restarting my podcast earlier. I even told my email list exactly when I’d be back. Then life stepped in.

My kids were home from college and the military. I slipped right back into full-time mom mode: cooking, baking, sitting around catching up, enjoying every minute of having them home. Work didn’t disappear, but it wasn’t the focus.

Then came travel. Vienna for Christmas markets. Madrid for New Year’s. Three Kings Day here in Spain. If you’ve ever lived outside the U.S., you know the holidays don’t end on January 1st.

And just when I tried to ease back into business? The flu hit my house. Hard.

That meant rearranging travel plans, caring for everyone else, and choosing what mattered most in that moment. Marketing wasn’t the battle I needed to fight.

And honestly? That’s what work-life integration actually looks like. It’s not curated. It’s not aesthetic. It’s real.

Why Forcing “Perfect Timing” Doesn’t Work

January is marketed as a clean slate. New year. Fresh energy. Big plans.

But sometimes January feels heavy instead of fresh. And when that happens, forcing yourself into productivity doesn’t create momentum, it creates burnout.

For me, that’s why Flow became my word of the year.

Flow meant letting go of old timelines.
Flow meant adjusting expectations.
Flow meant building a business that fits my current season of life, not one I outgrew years ago.

And marketing? It has to follow that same rhythm.

The Shift Back to Solopreneur Life

Last year, I made a big change. I went from running an agency back to being a solopreneur.

Agency life looks good from the outside. It sounds impressive. But the reality? It’s more management than marketing.

What I missed was the work itself: strategy, implementation, collaboration, and seeing the full picture of a client’s business. That’s where I thrive.

The economic shift forced many of us to re-evaluate our businesses. Some people pivoted. Some closed doors. I chose to adjust.

And while there were moments where agency life felt tempting again, it no longer fit who I am or how I want to work.

The Hardest Decision: Changing My Ideal Client

This part wasn’t easy.

For years, I built my business serving financial professionals. I still respect that industry deeply. I still work with some amazing clients. But I had to be honest with myself.

I was overinvested in proving myself to a market that doesn’t naturally buy the way I sell.

Financial professionals tend to:

  • Buy slowly
  • Rely heavily on referrals
  • Be risk-averse with marketing
  • Value execution over strategy

That meant constantly explaining why marketing matters, instead of partnering with people who already believe in it.

That gets exhausting.

I don’t want to convince people they need marketing. I want to work with people who already know they do.

Who I’m Here to Help Now

Today, I work with established service providers who:

  • Have been in business at least a couple of years
  • Already have clients and revenue to outsource
  • Value marketing
  • Want a strategic partner, not just posts
  • Have content but no system
  • Want marketing that feels human and aligned

These are people who are good at what they do, but their marketing is scattered, inconsistent, or always the first thing to fall off the list when life gets busy.

That’s where I come in.

Why AI Isn’t Replacing Marketers Anytime Soon

I love AI. I use it. I teach my clients how to use it.

But AI can’t:

  • Read the room
  • Understand context
  • Decide what should be shared versus protected
  • Make ethical judgment calls
  • Adjust messaging based on real-life seasons

That’s why marketing still needs humans.

As a strategist, I look at your business holistically. Your funnel. Your goals. Your capacity. Your life. Marketing shouldn’t exist in a vacuum, it has to work with reality.

Marketing That Moves With You

This season of my business is about flow.

Flow into the market that wants what I offer.
Flow into a pace that supports my life.
Flow into marketing that sounds like real humans not brands shouting into the void.

If you’re in the messy middle right now, you’re not behind. You’re adjusting.

And if you want help simplifying your marketing in a way that’s sustainable and aligned, you don’t have to do it alone.
