This past month, I attended FinCon 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia—a conference dedicated to financial creators. As a financial marketer, I wanted to explore this space, network with industry professionals, and learn about emerging trends in video and podcasting. It was my first in-person conference, and I left with a wealth of knowledge, some lingering questions, and plenty of reflections. Here’s how it all unfolded.

Why I Attended FinCon

Expanding My Network: While I work predominantly with CPAs, CFOs, and financial planning firms, I was curious about connecting with financial creators and thought leaders. I wanted to learn how they approach content creation and whether they might be an audience I could support in the future.

A Focus on Creators: I knew FinCon emphasized creators, especially in video and podcasting. As a podcaster myself, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to sharpen my skills and gain new insights.

Personal Perks: With two daughters attending school in Georgia (one in Atlanta), this conference allowed me to mix work and family time. While I spent most of my time at the event, my heart was full from shopping and dining with my girls.

The FinCon Experience

The Conference App: A Game-Changer
FinCon’s app was a standout feature. From connecting with attendees to mapping out schedules, the app helped me feel prepared and confident even before the event began. It allowed for early networking, making the conference experience smoother and more enjoyable.

Overcoming First-Day Jitters
Walking into the hotel, my anxiety was at an all-time high. But the warm welcome and helpful staff quickly put me at ease. Orientation for first-timers was particularly helpful—I met several women who became my go-to circle for the duration of the event.

Packed Days and Learning Opportunities
The schedule was intense, with events running from 8 AM to 5 PM. Between speaker sessions, community workshops, and vendor exhibits, there was always something to do. My favorite sessions were the interactive community events where we collaborated and applied what we learned in real time.

Highlights of FinCon

Networking and Connections: I met an incredible variety of people—from CPAs and financial planners to money coaches and content creators. While many attendees were still early in their marketing journeys, the conversations were valuable, and I even left with a potential client lead.

Invaluable Learning Opportunities: The focus on video and podcasting aligned perfectly with my goals. I walked away with actionable insights, tips for content repurposing, and fresh inspiration for my podcast.

The Merch!: FinCon didn’t skimp on goodies. Between notebooks, branded gear, and other freebies, I left with a suitcase full of swag.

Challenges and Reflections

Energy Management
With a packed schedule, I found myself exhausted by the end of each day. Hiding out in quiet corners to recharge became a regular habit. Next time, I’ll consider staying at the event hotel to make midday breaks easier.

Marketing Focus
While FinCon offered incredible value, I noticed a gap in discussions about marketing strategy. This experience has me considering whether I should propose a marketing session for future conferences.

Finding My People
While I met several CPAs and financial planners, many attendees were money coaches or creators not yet ready to outsource their marketing or heavily focused on YouTube. It left me questioning whether this conference fully aligns with my target audience.

Key Takeaways

Make Connections Before the Event: Using the conference app to connect beforehand made networking easier and more natural.

Know Your Goals: Whether it’s learning, networking, or generating leads, having clear objectives helps you navigate large events like FinCon.

Be Ready to Share Value: My background in financial marketing allowed me to offer actionable advice to attendees, which helped build meaningful connections.

Will I Attend FinCon Again?

While the experience was overwhelmingly positive, I’m reevaluating whether it’s the right space for my niche. That said, I’ve already secured tickets for FinCon 2025 in Portland, and the chance to reconnect with amazing people and learn even more might just sway me.
