Is Your Website Helping or Hurting Your Firm?”

TUNE IN ON YOUR FAVORITE APP

You can post consistently, show up on social media, send newsletters…But if your website doesn’t match your message, you’re sending people into a dead end.

Your website is the anchor of your funnel. Not just a “nice-to-have.”

In this episode, I sit down with Kristen Corey, Founder of Media Books Agency, to talk about:

  • Why your website needs to match your brand
  • The biggest mistakes accounting firms make with DIY sites
  • What your homepage should really include
  • Why done-for-you copywriting is a game-changer for financial firms

About the Guest:

After obtaining her Bachelors and Masters in accounting, Kristen went into public accounting where she became an auditor. It wasn’t until she had the opportunity to move abroad that she began to do marketing work for entrepreneurs. She quickly gained experience working with industries including tech, fashion, legal, real estate, and even a high-end chocolate brand.  Her experience grew from doing PR, graphic design, inbound marketing, social media management, to website development. Upon returning back from overseas she was hired by a boutique accounting company to work as both an accountant and marketer.

This is when she found combining her two favorite industries wasn’t just possible but needed, Kristen decided to start a marketing agency dedicated to helping accounting firms.

Today Kristen has helped hundreds of accounting firms build their online presence with modern and professional techniques that allow accounting firms to hit their goals.

If you’re an accountant, CFO, or firm owner pouring time into social media but not seeing leads turn into real conversations or clients… let’s talk about your website.

Your website isn’t just a digital business card. It’s the core of your marketing funnel. And if it’s not aligned with your brand or audience, it’s quietly blocking your growth.

I recently chatted with Kristen Corey of Media Books Agency, a former accountant turned marketing pro who now builds websites exclusively for accounting firms. Let’s break down what we talked about.

Why Accountants Struggle with Websites

You didn’t get into accounting to become a web designer. So, it makes sense that websites feel like a beast. But the most common issues we see aren’t just design-related; they’re strategic.

Here’s what Kristen sees all the time:

  • DIY websites that are half-done or filled with template copy
  • Outdated branding that doesn’t reflect current services or niche
  • Disconnect between social media and website messaging
  • Hidden calls-to-action (aka: the “Where do I click?!” problem)
  • Vague service descriptions that don’t speak to real client needs

Even if you’re active on social media, if your website doesn’t match the energy, tone, and clarity of your marketing, you’re going to lose people at the handoff.

Your Website Is the Anchor of Your Funnel

Social media is where we build brand awareness. Your website is where we close the loop.

You want your audience to land on your website and feel like:

“Ohhh yes, I’m in the right place. Let me book a call.”

That’s only possible when your copy, design, and layout work together to answer these key questions:

  • Who are you?
  • Who do you serve?
  • What do you do?
  • Why should I trust you?
  • What should I do next?

The best websites answer all of these in the first few seconds.

What Your Homepage Really Needs

Kristen shared a smart analogy: think of your homepage like a table of contents.

It shouldn’t try to do everything; it should tease the next step.

Your homepage should act like a “table of contents.” Giving visitors a quick intro to who you are, what you do, and where to go next (about page, services, blog, etc.).

Pro tip: If your ideal client is confused at any point, they’re gone. Make it easy to take the next step.

Stop Hiding Your High-Ticket Services

One of Kristen’s favorite stories? A firm wanted more advisory clients, but their website only mentioned advisory in a tiny bullet point… halfway down the page.

Most of the site was focused on bookkeeping. So, guess what kind of leads they were getting?

Only clients who wanted low-cost, entry-level support.

Moral of the story: Lead with what you want to attract.

If your website doesn’t highlight your most valuable service first, don’t be surprised when you’re not getting inquiries for it.

“I Thought You’d Write It All for Me…”

This one hit home. So many accountants expect their web designer to just “do it all,” but when the designer sends over a content form?

Cue the panic.

It’s hard to write about yourself. We get that. But that’s why working with someone who gets financial professionals makes such a difference. Kristen’s process includes full copywriting because she knows accountants don’t have time (or want) to write 5 pages of web content.

Want Your Marketing to Flow? Start With Your Site.

Here’s what I see often as a marketing strategist:

Accountants come to me for help with their email and social media. But their website says they serve tech startups when they really want to work with law firms. Or they want to focus on CFO services, but their homepage screams “bookkeeping.”

If we try to build content on top of a disconnected website, we’re just creating confusion.

Let’s clean that up first.

Your Website Should Be:

  • Clear, concise, and client-focused
  • Visually aligned with your brand and audience
  • Written with your actual voice (not stiff template copy)
  • Strategically guiding people to take action
  • The starting point of your entire content strategy
