Marketing in the financial industry can feel way more complicated than it needs to be. There are so many voices telling you what you “should” be doing, but most of them don’t actually understand the unique needs of accountants, CPAs, CFOs, and financial firms.

I’m sharing three common marketing myths that are making financial pros feel overwhelmed, overworked, and burnt out; and what to do instead to simplify your strategy without sacrificing results.

In this episode I chat about:

✨ Why trying to show up on every platform is watering down your message
✨ How to choose the right platform based on where your clients actually are
✨ Why stiff, overly “corporate” content is costing you trust and connection
✨ How showing more of your personality builds real credibility
✨ Why more content ≠ better marketing (and what to focus on instead)

If marketing has started to feel like a second full-time job, this one’s for you.

If you’ve ever felt like marketing is way more complicated than it needs to be, you’re not alone. Especially in the financial industry, where things tend to feel high-stakes and a little stiff, there are so many voices telling you what you should be doing:

“You need to be on TikTok if you want to be relevant.”
“You should post every day to stay visible.”
“You need to sound more professional.”
“You need to be everywhere.”

It’s exhausting.

Not because marketing itself is complicated, but because there are too many opinions floating around from people who don’t understand how financial businesses actually operate.

Your work is relational. Trust-based. Results-focused.

Marketing for financial pros is a different lane; one that needs to feel human, not forced.

So today, let’s simplify this. I am breaking down three popular marketing myths that are creating stress, burnout, and decision paralysis for accountants, CPAs, CFOs, and financial business owners.

And of course, what to do instead.

Myth #1: You Need to Be on Every Social Platform

This one causes the most stress, the most confusion, and honestly the most wasted time.

I recently talked to a client who came in feeling overwhelmed because she thought she had to start posting on TikTok. She didn’t want to be on camera, she didn’t enjoy short-form video, and she had about 100 followers on TikTok… while she had close to 1,000 on Instagram.

So why force something that doesn’t fit?

Because somewhere along the way, we started believing that being visible everywhere means reaching more people.

But here’s the real strategy:

Show up where your clients already are.

And show up where you can realistically stay consistent.

If your ideal clients spend more time on LinkedIn, but you’re pouring all your energy into Instagram… that’s not strategy; that’s just spinning your wheels.

A better approach:

  • Choose one primary platform to focus on (especially if you’re newer).
  • Once you’re comfortable, expand to a second, not a third, fourth, or fifth.
  • Build depth, not just presence.

This is how you create connections vs. chasing followers.

Myth #2: Your Marketing Needs to Sound “Professional” (aka stiff and formal)

If you come from a corporate environment, I get it.

You’re used to:

  • Email signatures that are six lines long
  • Every sentence being reviewed by five departments
  • Language that sounds like a tax booklet

But social media is different. People are looking for clarity, connection, and a sense of who you are. Not perfection.

You do not need to:

  • Use overly formal language
  • Speak like you’re presenting a report
  • Sound like you’ve memorized your firm’s mission statement

The most effective marketing in the financial industry feels:

  • Warm
  • Grounded
  • Clear
  • Human

You can be credible and have personality.

Those two things can exist together and honestly, when they do, people trust you more.

Think of your marketing like you’re sitting across from someone with a latte, not like you’re in a boardroom with fluorescent lighting and a stack of spreadsheets.

Your ideal clients want to feel like they know you, not just what you do.

Myth #3: More Content = Better Marketing

This is the myth that leads to burnout quicker than anything else.

Posting constantly doesn’t equal visibility. Posting constantly doesn’t equal connection. And it definitely doesn’t equal clients.

What actually matters?

Posting content that resonates.

Not just:

  • Tips
  • Facts
  • Definitions
  • “Tax season reminders”

But content that speaks to:

  • Stress points
  • Beliefs
  • Real concerns
  • Real situations your clients are living through

Your audience isn’t looking for more information. They’re looking for someone who understands them.

And here’s the great thing about platforms like LinkedIn: Posts can continue working for weeks. They don’t expire in 24 hours. They deepen over time.

So instead of spending your time creating more content…

Spend your time creating the right content:

  • Stories about client transformations (without sharing private details)
  • Behind-the-scenes reflections
  • What you’re learning in your business
  • What you want people to feel when they work with you

That’s the content that sticks.

So What Does Simplified Marketing Look Like?

It looks like:

  • Choosing platforms with intention
  • Showing up with your real tone, not a corporate script
  • Creating content that reflects your values, not just your knowledge
  • Making your marketing fit your life; not the other way around

Marketing should support your business; not drain it.

And when you simplify your marketing, it becomes easier to:

  • Stay consistent
  • Build trust
  • Attract the right clients
  • Actually enjoy your online presence
